Popular Culture Studies Launched at the University of Turku

The School of History, Culture and Arts Studies of the University of Turku established the Popular Culture Studies Master’s Degree Pathway on Tuesday, 9 September, with This is Popular seminar.

​Susanna Paasonen presented the Popular Culture Studies programme.

​The programme is a collaboration between the Departments of Cultural History, Media Studies and Musicology, and the International Institute of Popular Culture (IIPC). The Popular Culture Studies Master’s Degree Pathway is a two-year programme taught entirely in English and offers theoretical and historical perspectives into the study of popular culture.

The opening speech of the seminar was given by Professor Susanna Paasonen of the Department of Media Studies. In the programme, the students studywhat is popular and why.

– An important question is how high and low culture can be defined. For instance, popular culture can be mass culture, entertainment or folk culture. An essential part of research is producing and consuming popular culture, explained Paasonen.
