Record Number of Doctors

20.01.2015

In 2014, more doctors completed their degree than ever before – altogether 186 doctors graduated. As for the Master’s degrees, it was the second highest number in the history of the University of Turku; higher numbers were achieved only in 2008 which was the year of the degree structure reform.

– It has been a favourable time for studying and graduating. It is important that during recession we develop and take things forward. For example, knowledge and skills that can move the society towards a better future have been increased by the dissertation research, says Rector Kalervo Väänänen of the University of Turku.

The highest number of doctors graduated from the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

In 2014, 1713 Masters graduated from the University and 1519 students completed their Bachelor’s degree. The number of Master’s degrees was the highest, apart from 2008 when as many as 2320 Masters completed their degrees in the University of Turku and Turku School of Economics.

– The record number of doctors and unexpectedly many graduated Masters is an indication that our operations are well organised and productive, says Väänänen.

Recently, there has been a public discussion on academic unemployment. However, Researcher Juha Vainio from the Career Services of the University of Turku emphasises that the statistics show that the higher the person’s education, the more likely he or she is employed.

– According to the statistics of the Ministry of Employment and the Economy from November, 3.5 percent of doctors were unemployed, 6.3 percent of Master’s degree graduates and 6.5 of those with a Bachelor’s degree. All in all, 11.4 percent of the whole workforce was unemployed, says Sainio.
