In the future, food development students can have an MSc Tech degree both from the University of Turku and Jiangnan University. Completing the double degree requires studying in both countries and the courses studied must fill the requirements of both universities.

Vice Rector Yan Xu of Jiangnan University and Rector Kalervo Väänänen of the University of Turku signed a cooperation agreement on 3 November 2014.

Vice Rector of Jiangnan University, Professor Yan Xu, visited with his colleagues the University of Turku on 3 November 2014 to agree on cooperation between the two universities. The agreement with the University of Turku is the first cooperation agreement of Jiangnan University on an international degree programme at Master level.

– Jiangnan University is the leading Chinese university in food sciences. They have a vast course offering that can be utilised by our students. In China, the Finnish students also familiarise themselves with Chinese culture and the local industry, says the initiator of the cooperation between the two universities, Professor of Food Development Baoru Yang from the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Turku.

Starting from next autumn, students who have completed a BSc Tech degree can apply in the MSc Tech programme leading to a double degree. The duration of the programme is two years, one of which will be spent in Finland and one in China. In the first year, approximately 5–10 students will have the opportunity to study in China, but the intention is to increase the number of students up to 20 in the future.

According to Professor Yang, the Chinese students can benefit particularly from the University of Turku competence in the field of food quality, food safety and food healthiness. The University of Turku English degree programme is the only programme leading to MSc Tech and DSc Tech degrees in Finland in the field of food industry.

The programme prepares students to work as product developers in food industry or as experts in other functions in the field.
