The University of Turku reached the place 208 in the QS World University Rankings. The University received particularly strong evaluations in reputation and the teacher-student ratio.

– The rankings show that the University’s academic reputation and its reputation as an employer are good and increasing all the time. This is our strength, says Rector Kalervo Väänänen.

The QS World University Rankings is published annually and it involves all the best universities in the world both on the whole university level as well as on the subject level. In the subject rankings, the University of Turku was placed 218th in Life Sciences and Medicine, 263rd in Arts and Humanities and 276th in Social Sciences and Management.

The University’s place in the ranking was reduced by the number of international researchers, teachers and students. Of the University employees, over 13 percent come from abroad and of the students 4.5 percent.

– Considering the points of development, we are aware that we have to improve our internationalisation. We have already progressed in the matter, for example, by implementing the Tenure Track assistant professor programme and by working at our international Master’s degree programmes, says Väänänen.

In fact, the number of international students is increasing. As for employees, the numbers differ greatly each year.

During the ten-year history of the QS Rankings, the University of Turku has risen from 276th to 208th among the over 800 universities. At the same time, the competition between universities and the quality requirements have increased.
