The University of Turku Will Employ 50 New Doctoral Candidates

15.08.2014

There are fifty open vacancies for fixed-term doctoral candidate positions at the University of Turku from 1 January 2015 onwards. The call for applications is from 15 August to 15 September.

The University of Turku Graduate School (UTUGS) coordinates the doctoral training at the University of Turku. UTUGS consists of 16 doctoral programmes that cover all the disciplines of the University. All the doctoral candidates carrying out their degree in the University belong to one of the doctoral programmes. You can apply for the doctoral candidate positions through the doctoral programmes.

–  200 doctoral candidates are employed by the doctoral programmes with funding from the University. One quarter of the fixed-term positions is opened each year. This time, there will be 50 open vacancies, says UTUGS Coordinator Elise Pinta.

Significant Investment in Doctoral Training

The doctoral candidates are employed for fulltime dissertation research. The goal is that the doctoral degree will be attained in four years.

– Even though most of the funding for the doctoral candidates still has to be covered in some other way, such as grants or research funding from the supervisors, the University’s investment in doctoral training is quite significant. As a comparison, there are only 70 fixed-term doctoral candidate positions open at the University of Helsinki which is much larger in size, says the UTUGS Director and Professor Pirjo Nuutila.

In 2013, 164 doctors graduated from the University of Turku, which was for the second time the third highest number in Finland after the University of Helsinki and Aalto University.
