Turku Institute for Advanced Studies Launches New Scheme with Eight Fellowhips – Call for Applications Opens on 15 November

07.11.2022

The Turku Institute for Advanced Studies (TIAS) at the University of Turku launches the ground-breaking Turku Intersectoral Excellence Scheme with eight new fellowships. The fellows will be appointed for three years from 1 September 2023 and will undertake a secondment of two to six months in an organisation outside higher education. The call for applications is open 15 November 2022–9 January 2023, and TIAS organises an online launch event on 15 November where applicants can find out more about the fellowships.

The Turku Intersectoral Excellence Scheme (TIES) is a new fellowship scheme based at the Turku Institute for Advanced Studies (TIAS) research collegium, and founded in partnership with Turku Science Park. Funded by the European Union’s Marie Skłodowksa Curie Action (MSCA) programme, TIES is a blend of traditional Institute for Advanced Studies bottom-up research with intersectoral working.

All applicants appointed to the TIES programme will undertake a secondment with an organisation outside of higher education, which will last a minimum of two and a maximum of six months. The aim is to develop a cohort of expert researchers able to spot and develop opportunities across academia, industry, government and not-for-profit.

"We are excited to be launching the TIES programme which has been especially designed in consultation with our partners, Turku Business Region. By requiring TIES Fellows to undertake a secondment period as part of their research programme, we are adopting a pioneering approach to intersectoral working. We look forward to hearing from organisations interested in collaborating with us in order to build a programme which offers benefits to our partners, our Fellows and wider Finnish society," says TIAS Director, Professor Martin Cloonan.

TIES invites applications for up to eight Fellow positions for a three-year period starting from 1 September 2023. TIAS selects its Fellows via an international call for applications and welcomes applications from all disciplines within its five constituent faculties (Economics, Education, Humanities, Law and Social Sciences). Selection of successful applicants will be on the basis of academic excellence. The call for Fellows will open on November 15, 2022 and close on January 9, 2023.

Applicants must have completed their doctoral degree by the end of the application period. They must have gained their doctoral degree a maximum of eight years before the end of application period. In addition, the applicants must meet the EU’s mobility rules of having spent no more than 12 of the past 36 months in Finland.

TIAS will organise a launch event for the applicants, where they can find more about the fellowship opportunities. The event is held on online on 15 November at 3–4.30pm EET (GMT+2) and hosted by TIAS Director, Professor Cloonan.
