Turku University Library Services Reorganised into Six Libraries

07.01.2015

Turku University Library is renewing its organisation, and, at the same time, the names of the libraries will change.

In future, Turku University Library will consist of six libraries with equal status. As recently as 2010, the University Library had 17 libraries on the Turku campus. One of these is the former main library, located on the University Hill, and after the reform it will be renamed as Feeniks Library.

The Feeniks Library will house the languages and linguistics library, the language course books and the reference library in addition to the legal deposit collection and the special collections.

The new library units of the Turku University Library are:

  • Calonia Library at Caloniankuja 3
  • Feeniks Library on the University Hill
  • Educarium Library at Assistentinkatu 5
  • Turku School of Economics Library at Rehtorinpellonkatu 3
  • Quantum Library on the University Hill
  • Teutori Library at Lemminkäisenkatu 3

Depending on the moves, the libraries will open during the beginning of 2015.

Furthermore, library services are provided outside of the Turku campus – at the Teacher Education Library located in Rauma and at the Newspaper and Ephemera Services situated in Raisio.

Versatile Expert Services and Modern Workspaces

The reform will replace the discipline specific library structure. In future, library services will be organised around four service units. Feeniks will support the other libraries by providing central services.

The new service units are comprised of Learning services, Research services, Acquisition services and Access services.

According to the Library Director Ulla Nygrén, the Library’s customer service concept will be renewed along with the organisational reform.

- The massive service desks will be abandoned and we will work closer to customers. As more electronic resources become available, university libraries around the world are transforming into adaptable customer spaces which offer a wide range of resource-based expert services and modern facilities for on-site working.

According to Nygrén, the reshaping of the library is based on the ongoing development programmes of the university. These include the Reform of Administrative Services and Premises Programme which aims to direct funds to operations by merging spaces.

Turku University Library is the largest academic library in south-west Finland and it is open to all. The library is one of the six Finnish legal deposit libraries.
