University of Turku among Top Universities – Effective Research Leads the Way

22.09.2016

The University of Turku is among 350 best universities in the world according to the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.

The University's placement in the THE world university rankings, one of the biggest university rankings in the world, has been rising steadily over the past few years. In 2013, the University was not placed among the best 400 universities. In 2014, the University rose to the 351–400 category and last year the University reached the 201-350 category. This year, the University has kept its ranking in that category.

The competition between universities is constantly tightening. Therefore, remaining among the best universities in the world requires constant development and better achievements. The University's success has been particularly influenced by the high number of citations on research publications.

– It is great news that our ranking has remained the same and, even though the tighter economic situation creates new challenges, I believe that we can keep up with international competition with the help of our new strategy for 2016–2020, says Vice Rector Responsible for Research Kalle-Antti Suominen

In the THE Rankings, the universities are assessed on different indicators, such as research, education, interaction with business, and international outlook.

Nine Finnish universities are among the best 600 universities in the THE rankings. The University of Oxford and California Institute of Technology topped the list this year.
