02.11.2018

In the Best Global Universities Rankings, the University of Turku was ranked globally as 310th and as 141st in Europe.

As for the Finnish universities, the University of Turku was ranked third in the U.S. ranking. Published by U.S. News & World Report, the global ranking measures the recognition of the research conducted at the universities, and the number of publications and citations, for example. The ranking also includes region-, country-, and subject-specific rankings.

As for the Finnish universities, the University of Turku was ranked third after the University of Helsinki (global position 92), and Aalto University (position 253). Altogether, ten Finnish universities made it to the list.

Research Specialist Pirkko Mäenpää points out that the indicators used in the ranking favour large universities.

– Both the number of highly cited papers and number of citations gained by the publications are emphasised in the ranking without being in proportion with the size of the university, says Mäenpää.

In subject-specific rankings, the University of Turku was most successful within the following subjects: Space Science (position 123), Animal and Plant Science (position 128), Molecular Biology and Genetics (position 176), and Immunology (position 197).  In addition, the University of Turku was ranked among the best 200–300 universities in several disciplines.

1,250 universities were covered in the ranking. Globally, the three best universities are all located in the United States – Harvard, MIT, and Stanford. Europe’s top universities are British Oxford, Cambridge, and Imperial College London.

Having published the international ranking for the fifth time now, U.S. News & World Report has conducted national U.S. University rankings for over 30 years.
