University of Turku Suspends Cooperation with Russian Universities

10.03.2022

The University of Turku suspends cooperation with Russian universities and other Russian institutions for the time being in accordance with the recommendation of the Ministry of Education and Culture.

The refraining from cooperation concerns both research collaboration and possible other collaboration between organisations with Russian universities and other Russian institutions such as research institutes. The University has previously decided that new projects will not be initiated with Russian or Belarusian universities.

Student exchange to Russia or Belarus from the University of Turku is suspended for the time being, and the University does not accept exchange students from these countries. Russian or Belarusian students studying in Turku or students who are completing their exchange studies in Russia or Belarus can continue their studies as normal.

The suspended cooperation is related to sanctions against Russia and its focus is on supporting Ukraine.

– Our policies are not directed against Russian students and researchers. It continues to be possible to apply for studies or employment at the University of Turku regardless of your citizenship. The University also wishes to show its full support for those members of our community who are directly affected by the war, says Rector Jukka Kola.

The Ministry of Education and Culture also announced that Finland supports the decision of the European Commission to suspend cooperation within the framework of EU training and research programmes with Russian and Belarusian partners. The European Commission has suspended negotiations on new projects with Russian and Belarusian organisations related to first applications under Horizon Europe as well as payments to Russia and Belarus in ongoing Horizon 2020 projects.

The Ministry of Education and Culture, in collaboration with higher education institutions, is preparing measures to support Ukrainian students, staff and researchers in higher education institutions and to offer opportunities to study and work in Finland for those who are fleeing the war.

The University offers support services (intranet page, signing in required) for processing the situation.
