Vice Rector Riitta Pyykkö has been chosen as a member to the Register Committee of the European Qualiy Assurance Register for the term 1 July 2017 – 30 June 2019 on the basis of a proposal by the European Universities Association (EUA).

European Quality Assurance Register for Higher Education (EQAR) can accept to its
register reliable assessment organisations that fulfil the European Standards and Guidelines for quality assurance. At the moment, the register contains 44 organisations, including the Finnish Education Evaluation Centre from Finland that just recently renewed its membership.

Vice Rector Riitta Pyykkö from the University of Turku has been chosen as a member of the EQAR Register Committee which processes the applications of the assessment organisations and makes the decisions on the approval of the applications. There are 11 members in the Register Committee who work as independent experts. The European Universities Association (EUA) proposed Riitta Pyykkö as a member to the Committee.

All the 48 member states of the European Higher Education Area and Bologna Process are committed to shared quality management principles. Higher education institutions must have internal quality management procedures and they are assessed regularly.

– Evaluation organisations must also regularly participate in the international evaluation of their own operation. This way, the quality and independence of external evaluations are ensured, says Pyykkö.

The national assessment model is decided nationally for each country. However, the models must meet the common criteria. The most usual ones are accreditations of higher education institutions or degrees and audits of the quality systems of higher education institutions.

– Quality management proved by the assessments is important to universities, especially in international co-operation and also in student recruitment in many countries.
