Academic year 2025–2026 has started, and those starting their studies this autumn are first to arrive on campus. At the University of Turku, the Rector welcomes new students during orientation.

The traditional orientation events where the Rector greets new students began on Monday, 25 August. Rector Marjo Kaartinen met the new students of the University’s international degree programmes and of the Faculty of Social Sciences to welcome them to the University community.

“At the University of Turku, you become part of an academic community of more than 20,000 students and thousands of staff members, including researchers, teachers, and experts. Congratulations once again on starting your studies here,” said Kaartinen.

Rector Kaartinen also explained the history of Turku as a university and student city to the new students.

“We have been learning here since 1276 – the 750th anniversary of Turku Cathedral School is just around the corner. In 1640, the first university students and researchers in Finland began their studies and work at the Royal Academy of Turku. You are now part of this continuum.”

Kaartinen emphasised that the University of Turku is, first and foremost, a multidisciplinary and international research university.

“Learning and exploring new things inspire our academic community to build a better future together. Our University also offers various services to support you in your studies. I hope that you will remember to take full advantage of these services and never hesitate to reach out for support."

The Rector also introduced the new students to the University's shared values of creativity, openness, ethical principles, critical thinking, and strong community.

“Every member of our University community contributes to building a study and work environment that values all – an equal, non-discriminatory and thriving community is our common cause."

Kaartinen encouraged the students to engage in both their studies and student life with an open and curious mind.

“I hope you will get to know each other and build meaningful connections. I wish you all a rewarding first autumn of studies!"

On Tuesday, 2 September, the whole University community will gather together for the Opening Day festivities to kick off the new academic year. The Opening Carnival, which is organised by the Student Union, will take place from 12.00 to 14.00 in the square between Educarium and Publicum, and the Opening Ceremony will take place later in the day.

Rector Kaartinen met the new students of the University’s international degree programmes on Monday, 25 August.
