WIVE Collaboration Project Develops 5G Utilisation

The University of Turku is involved in a collaboration project called WIVE, the aim of which is to develop concepts, enable technologies and test new services offered by 5G, especially in automated transport and media delivery.

​An industry group of Finnish companies and research institutes led by Nokia Bell Labs has established a collaboration project called WIVE (WIreless for VErticals) to enable new types of industries to better gain competitive advantage from the latest wireless technologies, especially 5G.

The project, co-funded by Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation (Tekes), involves partners such as Nokia, Teleste, Telia, ABB, Cargotec Kalmar, Finnish Broadcasting Company (Yle), Digita, regulator FICORA, and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. Of the higher education institutions, the University of Turku, Turku University of Applied Sciences, Åbo Akademi University, Tampere University of Technology and Aalto University are involved.

5G Challenges Information Security

Over the next 10 years, tens of billions of connected devices will converge into intelligent and programmable systems that will improve people's everyday life in a number of areas. Transportation and resource consumption, learning and work, healthcare and wellness will all be affected by this change which will bring massive opportunities. At the same time, it increases the capacity requirements for networks.

The University of Turku contributes to the WIVE project by analysing and developing technology solutions that enable information security.

– Massive machine connectivity drastically increases the number of internet connected devices and the amount of information available in communication networks. This certainly not only challenges the capacity of communication networks, but also increases the type of data content available in the Internet and the number of devices with very weak computing capacity and protection, which makes it extremely challenging to provide satisfactory information security and data protection. This will potentially cause a great security threat to IT systems and therefore to the entire information society, as well as to personal cybersecurity, says Professor Jouni Isoaho from the Department of Futures Technologies at the University of Turku.

Innovative Service Concepts and New Business Opportunities

The aim of the WIVE project is to develop concepts and enable technologies, as well as to test and experiment new vertical services offered by 5G, especially in relation to machine connectivity and media content delivery. New communication services place versatile requirements for e.g. reliability, latency, data rates, security, and availability.  The purpose of the WIVE project is to demonstrate that these requirements can be fulfilled with future 5G networks with improved flexibility and cost-efficiency.

– Deep understanding of the needs of different verticals and the variety of 5G user contexts is in the core of our business.  We study evolving media consumption patterns and develop revolutionary spectator experiences, for example, as part of the Telia 5G Arena collaboration in Helsinki and media partnership with the Finnish Ice Hockey league. Machine type connectivity and ultra-reliable communications are just as crucial for building smarter traffic, manufacturing solutions and for other digitalisation initiatives that we discuss with our corporate clients, says Janne Koistinen who is in charge of the Telia 5G programme in Finland.
