Language and Communication Studies at the Open University

Finnish as a Foreign Language 

The Centre for Language and Communication Studies at The University of Turku offers Finnish as a foreign language studies from beginner's level (A1) to advanced (B1). 

The following courses are organized as open university studies:

Let's Start! Introduction to Finnish Studies 1 ECTS credit

Let's Start! Introduction to Finnish Studies course is offered as an online self-study course from September 7 to December 15, 2026. The course prepares students to the Finnish studies. During the course, the student gets familiar with the Finnish language, its structure and ways of learning Finnish.

Registration: Course is free of charge. Quota 75 students. Students are selected in order of registration.

Finnish 1, 4 ECTS credits

Finnish 1 course is offered as an online self-study course from September 7 to December 15, 2026. During the course, the student practices especially Finnish language communication skills. The recommendation is that Let's Start! Introduction to Finnish Language Studies 1 credit has been completed before the start of this course or is completed at the same time as the Finnish 1 course. 

The course has two exams, which are taken at e-Exam. The exams are taken in the campus's electronic exam service and cannot be taken online. You can also take the University of Turku electronic exam in e-exam rooms at other universities.

Registration: Quota 50 students. Students are selected in order of registration.

Finnish 2, 4 ECTS credits

Finnish 2 course is offered as an online self-study course from September 7 to December 14, 2026. During the course, the student deepens their Finnish language skills especially by practising their Finnish language communication skills. They practice pronunciation, reading, listening and speaking in pairs and small groups, also using digital platforms, and do some writing tasks. During the course, they also do homework to support their language learning and the development of their study skills. 

The course has two exams, which are taken at e-Exam. The exams are taken in the campus's electronic exam service and cannot be taken online. You can also take the University of Turku electronic exam in e-exam rooms at other universities.

Registration: Qualifications: Finnish 1 or equivalent knowledge of Finnish. Quota 50 students. Students are selected in order of registration.
