Meet Channeh Camara, a current master's student at the University of Turku and an UTUambassador 2025-2026!
"Hi! I am Channeh Camara from The Gambia, a second-year Materials Engineering major with a specialization in Health Technology Materials. I completed my bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering at Kocaeli University, Türkiye.
I chose this programme at UTU because of its interdisciplinary nature. It provides a unique opportunity to work on innovative solutions to real-world healthcare challenges. My passion for biomaterials was also another reason for choosing this programme. I believe that these materials can greatly influence the health tech sector. Looking ahead, I aspire to build a career as a materials engineer in a healthcare setting.
I am inspired by the degree of professionalism the professors at UTU possess. They are qualified and always ready to assist when needed. I appreciate the flexibility in my studies as well, as it allows me to focus on what I am truly passionate about, which is extremely important to me.
Studying at UTU has been something that I have always dreamt of, and I am excited to embark on this journey. As I am in my second year I am preparing to write my master’s thesis. However, whenever am free I still like to explore Turku and enjoying its best spots, along with the warmth of its people and the beauty of its nature.
UTU has a lot to offer, and I am excited to explore it all. Always up for a chat!"
Channeh's study experience
I chose this field because of my passion for biomaterials. During my bachelor’s studies, I took a biomaterials class that captivated me with the incredible potential of these materials. This led me to search for programmes in Finland that offered courses in biomaterials, materials engineering, or related fields. I was particularly impressed by the program at UTU and the expertise of the professors at the Mateng Group (@mateng_utu), which ultimately influenced my decision.
Studying in a new environment comes with responsibilities, however here at the university you don’t have to bear It all alone. I am inspired by the degree of professionalism the professors at UTU possess. They are qualified and always ready to assist when needed. I appreciate the flexibility in my studies as well. It allows me to focus on my passion, which is extremely important to me.
As I embark on this journey, I recognize that things will evolve. During my bachelor’s studies, I couldn’t quite decide between pursuing a career in industry or academia, but now I find myself pursuing a master’s degree. Looking ahead, I aspire to build a career as a materials engineer in a healthcare setting.
My hobbies include baking and cooking, and watching series, but being in Finland, I also hope to add ice-skating to my list of hobbies.
