Junaid – Master's student in Health Technology

Meet Muhammad Junaid Raza, a current master's student at the University of Turku and an UTUambassador 2025-2026!

"Ever wondered how technology can solve real-world health problems? That’s what brought me to UTU! I'm a programmer at heart, blending tech and health in my studies, and UTU's renowned Digital Health Technology department inspires me daily. Projects like New Life have sparked my passion to make a tangible difference.

Outside academics, you’ll likely find me writing poetry, hiking to discover new trails around Turku, or photographing the city’s character through its old buildings and moody weather. I played football for three years during college and now keep up the energy at the gym whenever I’m not immersed in tech.

As for the future, PhD? Maybe. But if not, you might just catch me standing on a mountain summit a couple of years from now, reflecting on how far the journey has taken me."

Junaid's study experience:

What is your background and how did you end up choosing your programme?

Originally from Pakistan, I completed my bachelor’s degree in software engineering. After working for 3 years as a mobile application engineer, I decided to pursue a master’s in health technology. I’ve always had a keen interest in leveraging technology to improve lives, and this field offers the perfect blend of development and healthcare. The idea of using my technical background to innovate in the health sector really excites me.

What have you found special in the study experience at UTU?

The best part is the lack of hierarchy—I can directly reach out to professors, deans, or even the rector. Everyone here is approachable, and the emphasis on mental wellness makes the learning experience supportive. It’s a community where you’re encouraged to thrive academically and personally.

What are your future career plans?

Before joining UTU, I planned to continue my career as a software developer. But once I started my studies in Health Technology, I realized the potential to combine my software skills with my new knowledge in healthcare. I’m passionate about working in the health tech field, and I’m eager to make a meaningful impact by integrating development with health solutions.

How do you balance your studies during your free time?

In my free time, I enjoy chasing sunsets and walking in the rain—there’s something calming about Turku’s grey clouds. I’m also captivated by the beauty of this city, often capturing its sunsets, the changing skies, and the peaceful moments I find while exploring. When I need a break, I head to quiet, less crowded spots to write poetry—it’s my way of balancing the academic grind with some creative expression.
