Dress code

The Ceremonial Conferment of Doctoral Degrees is the most formal academic celebration of the University. The dress code for the occasion must be observed closely.

Sword sharpening ceremony

Doctors and honorary doctors also conferrers, marshal and master of ceremonies:

  • Dress, jacket suit or sophisticated trouser suit (length and colour are optional)
  • Dark suit (black, dark blue or dark grey)

Doctor’s and honorary doctor’s companion:

  • Dress, jacket suit or sophisticated trouser suit (length and colour are optional)
  • Dark suit (black, dark blue or dark grey)

Guests also hosts of honorary doctors, professors and emeritus professors:

  • Dress, jacket suit or sophisticated trouser suit (length and colour are optional)
  • Dark suit (black, dark blue or dark grey)
     

Conferment ceremony

Doctors and honorary doctors also conferrers, marshal and master of ceremonies:

  • Long, black gown with long sleeves (not décolleté) *, black gloves, black shoes (not open from the toe or heel), no handbag, skin colored tights
  • White tie *, black waistcoat, white bow tie, white gloves, black leather shoes, no white pocket square

Doctor’s and honorary doctor’s companion:

  • Dark, long or short evening dress - no hat other than doctoral hats, long sleeves
  • White tie or a dark suit, if white tie: black waistcoat, white bow tie, white gloves, black leather shoes, no white pocket square

Guests also hosts of honorary doctors, professors and emeritus professors:

  • Dark, long or short evening dress - no hat other than doctoral hats, long sleeves
  • White tie or a dark suit, if white tie: black waistcoat, white bow tie, white gloves, black leather shoes, no white pocket square

Everyone:

  • Decorations (Academic decorations are not used in the conferment ceremonies)

Those who participate in the Academic Procession dress in the similar manner to the honorary doctors and doctors or in the doctoral dress of the university the person has graduated from. Only the honorary doctors, doctors, conferrers, marshals and master of ceremonies have a sword.
Color of the gloves is defined by the type of dress:
Dark, long or short evening dress, black gloves
White tie or a dark suit, white gloves  


Ceremonial conferment banquet

Doctors and honorary doctors also conferrers, marshal and master of ceremonies:

  • Long, black gown, doctoral hat, sword. At the banquet the gown does not have to be long-sleeved. Preferably not strapless or sleeveless
  • White tie, white waistcoat, white bow tie, white pocket square **, doctoral hat, sword, (patent leather shoes)

Doctor’s and honorary doctor’s companion:

  • Long gown (preferably coloured)
  • White tie, white waistcoat, white pocket square **, (patent leather shoes)

Guests also hosts of honorary doctors, professors and emeritus professors:

  • Long gown (preferably coloured)
  • White tie, white waistcoat, white pocket square **, (patent leather shoes)

Everyone: 

  • Decorations (Academic decorations are not used in the conferment ceremonies)

At the banquet, only the honorary doctors, doctors, conferrers, marshals and master of ceremonies have doctoral hats and swords.  


*) Please deliver the doctoral hat and sword marked with your name to the University beforehand

**) If you have no decorations
