Department of Musicology

Musicology examines music in all its different forms and provides the methods for hearing, interpreting, explaining and utilising sonic culture.

The Department of Musicology at the University of Turku emphasises cultural musicology. We examine music in its various forms: from popular to classical music; from mainstream music to more marginal works; musical theatre; the music that we hear in films, TV and games; and sound design. We also develop new ways of researching music and other sonic phenomena.

The study of musicology helps develop the multifaceted skills necessary for the production of new knowledge on sonic cultures. The professional profile of a musicologist is vast, spanning from the music industry to music criticism and cultural management. Our alumni are highly sought-after professionals in the field.
