Services for students with special needs
If you are print disabled, you are entitled to an extended loan period for course books. The loan period is extended for one week. This applies to 14 days loans only.
Do as follows:
- Show an expert opinion of your print disability or the recommendation of the university accessibility planner in the library. You can show the expert opinion or recommendation in any library unit.
- We will make a note in our library register that the course book loans are extended for one week. The reason for this will not be noted in the register.
After the library customer service has added the note you get the 1 week extension to your loans automatically no matter how you check out your loans. You can renew your course book loans by yourself in Volter, by phone or by email.
The extended loan period applies to renewals as well.
Customers with physical disability can request books to one library.
This is how it works:
- Visit any of the library’s customer services in person to agree on the service.
- You can make the book request in person in the library or by e-mail at library@utu.fi. You may request books from different Turku University libraries and then collect them all from the library of your choice.
- When you make the book request, please also indicate from which library you wish to pick them up.
- Library will contact you and estimate the delivery time. Library will inform you if the book is on loan and assists in making the request if necessary. When you receive an e-mail notice of arrival, send email to the address library@utu.fi and tell where you would like to have the books delivered. We will then email you to let you know, when your requested material is ready for collection.
- Collect the books yourself or ask someone else to collect them on your behalf. If someone else will be collecting the materials, please provide the name of the person in advance to the library. Remember also to take with you/give the book collector a library card for borrowing.
From Celia university students with print disabilities can borrow textbooks free of charge.
The textbooks are either talking books with human narration or DAISY books with TTS and the text of the book included. These books are suitable for all persons with print disabilities.
You can become a Celia customer by contacting Turku University Library. We make the online registration for the Celianet service for you. You don't need to present an expert opinion of your print disability to the library.
We also give you advice about how to use Celia books.
If the textbook you need cannot be found in an accessible format, Celia will produce it for you free of charge. Please note that it takes three months to produce a new book.
