Feeniks Library will close at the end of October – services to continue at Arcanum Library

12.10.2026

Feeniks Library will close to customers at the end of October, and its services will move to Arcanum Library. For the time being, materials from the Feeniks Library closed storage will continue to be available for request.

Preparations are under way for the renovation of Feeniks Library. The closure of the library will bring changes to library services as well as to the collection and availability of materials.

Feeniks Library to close on Friday 30 October

The customer areas of Feeniks Library will close at 16.00 on Friday 30 October 2026.

Customers are asked to remove their personal belongings and library materials from the lockers at Feeniks Library by Friday 30 October at the latest. After this date, library staff will empty the lockers and return any library materials left in them.

At the end of October, library staff will also return materials currently on loan that are being held at the Feeniks Library customer service desk. These materials can be requested again from 5 November.

Materials from the Feeniks Library closed storage can still be requested for the time being

Materials from the Feeniks Library closed storage can continue to be requested for the time being, even though the library's customer areas will be closed. However, requests will be temporarily unavailable from 29 October to 4 November.

From 5 November 2026, requested materials from the closed storage can be collected from Arcanum Library. Please note that requested materials may take longer to become available than they do currently, as they will be transported from Feeniks to Arcanum on scheduled transport days. You will receive a notification when your requested material is ready for collection.

Materials borrowed from Feeniks Library can be returned to other library locations

Materials borrowed from Feeniks Library can be returned to any library location on the Turku campus. The return boxes outside Feeniks Library will also remain in use for the time being.

Feeniks Library services to move to Arcanum Library

From 2 November, Feeniks Library services, including the collection of interlibrary loans, the microfilm reader and payment services, will be available at Arcanum Library (Arcanuminkuja 1). The UTUbox containing laptops available for loan will also move to the lobby area of the Arcanum building. Arcanum Library offers a range of bookable and freely available study spaces.

Lockers will be available at Arcanum Library for storing and using library materials that may only be used on the library premises and cannot be borrowed for home use.

The opening and service hours of Arcanum Library will be extended from 2 November 2026:

  • The library will be open Mon–Thu 8.00–20.00, Fri 8.00–18.00 and Sat 10.00–16.00.
  • Customer service will be available from 10.00, Mon–Sat.
  • University of Turku access card holders can also use the library at other times, subject to their access rights to the building.

Planned renovation behind the changes

A renovation of Feeniks Library is being planned. In preparation for the renovation, the library will be closed to customers for several years. As part of the planned renovation, the library will be redesigned to provide spaces for studying and social interaction.

The cultural materials stored in the underground storage at Feeniks Library, which comprises several kilometres of shelving, will be moved to temporary storage before the planned construction work begins. The move to temporary storage is scheduled to begin in early 2027. During the move, the materials will be unavailable for several months. Further information will be provided separately before this period begins.

In the future, the materials will be moved from the temporary storage facilities to a new book depository once it has been completed. Feeniks Library is planned to reopen following the renovation in 2029.

Please check the library relocation website for updates on the progress of the library relocations and any possible interruptions to services.
