QS Ranking: University of Turku among the Best 500 Universities in Seven Disciplines

The international QS World University Rankings by Subject ranks altogether 500 universities in 48 different disciplines. In the 2018 ranking, the most successful disciplines from the University of Turku were Nursing Science (44th) and Education (151–200).

​The ranking included altogether 1,130 universities that were ranked in 48 disciplines. The University of Turku was ranked in seven disciplines:

  • Nursing (44th)
  • Education (151‒200)
  • Biology (251–300)
  • Medicine (251‒300)
  • Sociology (251‒300)
  • Economics (351‒400)
  • Physics (401–450)

In addition, universities were ranked in five larger categories, and the University of Turku was in the top 500 in four of them:

  •  Life Sciences & Medicine (254th)
  • Arts and Humanities (349th)
  • Social Sciences and Management (343rd)
  • Natural Sciences (451‒500)

The QS Rankings by Subject considers academic reputation, employer reputation and effectiveness of research, the emphasis of which differs between disciplines.

Vice Rector responsible for research Kalle-Antti Suominen notes that success in international rankings is important in the continuously increasing competition between universities.

– Our results in the ranking clearly indicate that the University of Turku is a high-quality and multidisciplinary university. Success in rankings proves our competitiveness as an international higher education and research university, when we compete for international students, doctoral candidates and researchers, says Suominen.
