The amount of publications at the University of Turku is growing

19.04.2018

The University's publication information from the year 2017 has now been reported to the VIRTA publication information service. Final statistics will be published in the Vipunen statistics service by 5 June.

Number of publications increased significantly

According to tentative statistics, the amount of publications increased nearly 14 % compared to 2016. 4830 publications from the year 2016 were reported, and the current number of 2017 publications is 5500. The additional extended database retrievals carried out by the Library added nearly 400 completing publications from the year 2016.

The total publication volume for 2017, which also includes publications that do not meet the Ministry of the Education and Culture criteria for collecting data (such as conference abstracts), is 5800 while in 2016 the amount was 5300.

The growing number of publications is due to the increasing contribution of the researchers as well as the new easy tools. In 2017 the Library also started faculty visits concentrating in questions concerning publication information collection. The new simplified publication reporting form was launched in summer 2017, and the Researcher'sCV reporting tool that makes it easy to check the reporting situation of one's publications was introduced in December. In addition, the Library extended the regular database retrievals to include the multidisciplinary database Scopus. At the moment, the percentage of publications imported by the Library varies from a few to more than a 50 % depending on field of research; e.g. over 60 % of the publications at the Faculty of Sciences and Engineering were imported straight from databases.

Open publishing in rapid increase

Within the last few years, the University of Turku has profiled as a significant national level actor in open science. 35 % of the University's 2017 publications were parallel published to open access, whereas the percentage back in 2015 was 3.

New functionalities and faculty visits

The Current Research Information System is under continuing development, and the new functionalities such as the publication information reporting form, Researcher'sCV and ORCID integration help save the researcher's time and avoid multiple reporting of one's publications. The Library's publication information management services organised several faculty visits and researcher meetings to tell about the new services. The visits will continue in 2018.
