A New Futures Conference in Helsinki

Next June, the Wanha Satama venue in Helsinki will host Future Infinite, a new international futures studies conference. The conference will bring together innovative minds from the fields of research, business and government to develop new kinds of business activities. This event is one of a kind in Europe.

The Future Infinite – Helsinki International Conference for Solving Global Challenges will be held on 12–13 June 2014. 'Sustainable futures in a changing climate', the 16th International Futures Conference of Finland Futures Research Centre, will be held in the same venue on 11 to 12 June 2014, under the title Future Infinite Academic. One day will be common to both events.

Future Infinite targets corporate leaders and decision-makers, while the Future Infinite Academic is aimed at academics and futurists. Some 400 participants are expected.

World-famous speakers presenting their thoughts on the future include R.K. Pachauri, Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC); Intel futurist Brian Johnson; Professor Sohail Inayatullah (Tamkang University); Synthetic Biology expert Anthony Evans (Glowing Plant, USA); Electrolux futurist Clive van Heerden and Professor Paul Verschure from the Robot Companions for Citizens project.

"The future is full of opportunities. This first Future Infinite Conference is a melting pot for futures studies, bringing leading lights from research and business life together with the biggest ideas from around the world," says futurist Elina Hiltunen, Chairperson of the Programme Team.

The event will feature two parallel series of lectures that will involve seeking and finding business, social, political, environmental and technological solutions for the future. On Friday 13 June, the Future Pitches section of the conference will be held. In this part of the programme, partner companies will share their perspectives on the future. In addition, best entries to the Everyday Innovations of the Future competition for students will be showcased at the conference.

The event is organised by Messukeskus and Finland Futures Research Centre at the University of Turku. Business publication Kauppalehti is the conference's key media partner and its marketing partner is the communications agency Miltton.
