The Tradition of the Master´s Degree Ceremony Was Revived

Turku School of Economics at the University of Turku organised the master´s degree ceremony, where masters and honorary doctorates were conferred. The previous master´s degree ceremony of the faculty was arranged 50 years ago.

​Degree ceremony is a solemn end of the university studies, where conferred masters get the right to use the signs of the academic degree. These are the master´s ring, which symbolizes the fellowship of the university and the laurel wreath, which symbolizes knowledge and the triumphal end of the academic toil.
 
Besides the masters, the promotion is also for the jubilee masters and the honorary doctorates. The honorary tittle jubilee master is given in the ceremony to masters, who were conferred fifty years ago. Honorary doctorates are individuals, who have significantly contributed to their scientific field or played an influential role in the society.
 
The first Finnish promotion was arranged in the Academy of Turku in the year 1634 and the forms of the tradition came from the medieval Paris. The first master´s degree ceremony of Turku School of Economics was arranged in 1960. This year the faculty held this ceremony for the third time.
 
In the promotion, 147 masters, eight jubilee masters and one honorary doctorate were conferred. The tittle of Honorary Doctorate

Three day festivities

The celebrations started on Thursday 24 May with an event, where the laurel wreaths were bind. Director of Turku School of Economics, Satu Lähteenmäki welcomed everyone and gave a speech, where she highlighted the role of the faculty´s masters in the modern society.
 
- Business know-how is needed more and more. Some of our graduates become artists, writers or researchers and quite many apparently also serve in the economic life, Lähteenmäki said with a smile.
 
- Graduates of Turku School of Economics leave abroad more often than others. They find international posts already at the beginning of their careers, Lähteenmäki told.
 
The master´s degree ceremony was arranged at the Turku Concert Hall on Friday 25 May. From the ceremony, the participant procession continued to the Turku Cathedral. The ceremony supper was partaken at the Turku Fair and Congress Center and a breakfast on the following day at the Samppalinna hill concluded the promotion.
