Living Factories Will Introduce Synthetic Biology Education to Finland

Synthetic biology is making a name for itself all over the world and is now coming to Finland as well. The Living Factories project, a joint endeavour of VTT, University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University, is the forerunner in the field in Finland and it received nearly 4 million euro funding from Tekes.

Researchers from the University of Turku have genetically engineered microbes to produce renewable propane for the first time. Their study was published this week in Nature Communications. Propane is a major component of liquid petroleum gas (LPG) with an existing global market for a wide number of applications.

At the University of Dar es Salaam, he used geographical information that was collected with the help of the locals in his doctoral thesis which was supervised by Senior Lecturer in Geography Niina Käyhkö of the University of Turku.
