Studying at the Department of Finnish History

Finnish history has been taught at the University of Turku since it was established in 1920. The department offers versatile education in Finnish history covering the period from the Middle Ages until the present day.

Students can take a degree in Finnish history in bachelor, master and doctoral levels. In addition, Finnish history majors can apply to the Master’s Degree Pathway in Records and Archives Management. The Master’s Degree Pathway is organised in cooperation with the University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University.

Our staff are experts on various historical areas from the Middle Ages to the present day. This provides a basis for versatile and high-quality training and research. One of our strengths is also a close communication with students and individual study guidance from the beginning of the studies up to graduation.

Studies in Finnish history consist of historical methodology, theories, and various themes such as urban, economic, gender and family history as well as the history of the ideas.
