Researchers at the Department of Finnish History study phenomena that span from medieval and early modern times to the formation of modern society.
Finnish history has been taught at the University of Turku since it was established in 1920. The department offers versatile education in Finnish history covering the period from the Middle Ages until the present day.
At the Department of Finnish History, we teach and study the history of Finland with a wide-ranging approach. In a cosmopolitan world, it is necessary to link the history of Finland to a broader context, where Finland’s history is seen as part of the history of the Baltic Sea Region and Europe.
