Philosophy

Philosophy examines the fundamental questions underlying societal decision-making, scientific inquiry, and other forms of human thought and action. Philosophical problems are approached through argumentation, and the evaluation of arguments is an essential part of philosophy. The strengths of the Philosophy Unit at the University of Turku include the history of philosophy, social philosophy, the philosophy of mind and perception, and practical ethics.

In addition to bachelor's, master's, and doctoral studies in Philosophy, the Philosophy department also teaches in other faculties of the University of Turku. In the Faculty of Social Sciences, the department offers instruction in social and political philosophy, argumentation, the philosophy of science, and the ethics of scientific research. Philosophy is also involved in the study modules on multiculturalism and in the interdisciplinary study module on artificial intelligence. In the Faculty of Medicine, philosophy has provided teaching in areas such as bioethics and the philosophy of science. Many philosophy courses are part of the study module on worldview studies, coordinated by the Faculty of Humanities. In the School of Economics, philosophy has offered courses in the philosophy of science and contributed to the study module on sustainable development. In the Faculty of Science, philosophy has been involved in, for example, environmental science education.

In the QS World University Rankings, the discipline has been ranked to places 280-300 among the philosophy programs worldwide.
