Change the Login Method to PubMed’s NCBI Account by the end of May 2021

25.05.2021

Do you use MyNCBI account where you have saved PubMed searches and alerts? The login method to PubMed’s own account will change starting from 1st June 2021.

The most common login method to PubMed is to use NCBI credentials. After 1st June 2021, you will no longer be able use NCBI credentials for login. You will need to link your account to another login option, such as ORCiD, Facebook, Microsoft, or an NIH account.

The University of Turku SSO login has also been added as a sign-in option. If you choose to login with the university credentials, please note that the SSO service does not meet the normal data protection standards of HAKA and UTU, as the organisation does not implement the GÉANT Code Of Conduct (CoCo). In other words, it is not certain whether they comply with the requirements of EU data protection legislation to the same extent as the CoCo organisations conforming to our normal standards. If you choose to use the SSO login method, you are solely responsible for the information you provide to the service.

To add a linked account, you can do the following:

  1. Login to PubMed as usual.
  2. Click on your username on the top right corner to open your NCBI Account Settings page.
  3. Go to Linked Accounts and choose Change.
  4. You may choose several options for a linked account from the Login Account Options list.
  5. You may search the list by service name, e.g. ORCiD. To find the University of Turku, enter the search word Turku.
    • If you chose University of Turku, you will be taken to a page with a message "Before continuing, you have to approve delivery of your personal details to target address https://federation.nih.gov/FederationGateway". Login with your UTU credentials if needed, check your information and approve account linking.
    • If you chose e.g. ORCiD, you will see a page with the message "National Center for Biotechnology Information has asked for the following access to your ORCiD record: Read your information with visibility set to Trusted Parties." To approve choose Authorize access.
  6. After this you will be taken automatically to the Linked Accounts page. Now you have added a linked account that you can use to login to your PubMed account.
