Visiting scholar Jules Rochielle Sievert presented a new book Legal Design: Dignifying People in Legal Systems in Calonia research lunch on November 18.
Since 2013 they have been the Creative Director of NuLawLab, Northeastern University School of Law, in Boston. The book is edited by them together with Associate Professor Miso Kim and Executive Director Dan Jackson, also from Northeastern University.
Legal design is a rapidly growing field that seeks to improve the legal system's accessibility, usability, and effectiveness through human-centered design methods and principles.
NuLawLab is the interdisciplinary innovation laboratory at Northeastern University School of Law. It is a global forerunner of Legal Design. NuLawLab works to create dialogue that allows to find mechanisms to advance social equity.
The book provides a comprehensive introduction to legal design, covering fundamental concepts, definitions, and theories. Chapters explore the role of legal design in promoting dignity, equity, and justice in the legal system.
Contributors present a range of community-driven projects and method-focused case studies that demonstrate the potential of legal design to transform how people experience the law. Jules Rochielle Sievert is currently pursuing an Interdisciplinary Ph.D. at the College Of Art, Media, and Design. From 2017-2019, they were Creative Placemaking Policy Fellow at Arizona State University through the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts.
Dr. Miso Kim is an Associate Professor of Experience Design at Northeastern University and serves as the Design Director at NuLawLab. She holds a PhD in Design, along with an MDes in Interaction Design and an MDes in Communication Planning and Information Design, all from Carnegie Mellon University.
Dan Jackson is the Executive Director of NuLawLab at Northeastern University School of Law. He also chairs the American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on the Delivery of Legal Services and holds a JD from Northeastern University.
