Notable Colombian Science and Culture Award for Leila Perea-Lowery

DDS, PhD, MBA, docent Leila Perea-Lowery was nominated in her home country Colombia for a prestigious distinction because of her academic achievements. This distinction is granted to Afro-Colombians who have made outstanding contributions for the betterment of Colombia.

This distinction attempts to strengthen integration into national society by exalting the good deeds of the Afro-Colombian population in significant fields for the country's development. Perea-Lowery’s distinction was in the category of academia.

Leila Perea-Lowery is a dentist, a specialist in prosthodontics, with a PhD in Biomaterials Science awarded by the University of Turku and an MBA also from the University of Turku. As a researcher, Perea-Lowery has worked on the improvement of the physical and mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced composite fixed dental prostheses. 

Perea-Lowery is currently involved in the implementation of a research project that aims at identifying biomimetic approaches for the re-establishment of the functionality of dentine. She is also conducting research with the aim of comprehending the composition and behavior of CAD/CAM polymers for digitally fabricated complete dentures and assessing the mechanical properties of 3D-printed dental materials.

– Leila Perea-Lowery is an excellent example of a successful international researcher trained by the Institute of Dentistry at the University of Turku. Perea-Lowery and researchers like her will strengthen the University of Turku and bring international visibility and notoriety to the University, says the Head of the Institute of Dentistry, Professor Pekka Vallittu.

Perea-Lowery has significantly benefited from the support within the Turku academic community. 

– This distinction goes a long way in helping me to inspire others to pursue science and give back to the wider world, says Perea-Lowery.
