University of Turku in World’s Top 500 in Several Disciplines in QS World University Rankings by Subject

The University of Turku was ranked in the world’s top 500 universities in four broad subject areas and 12 disciplines in the 2019 QS World University Rankings by Subject.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject ranks the world’s best 500 universities in 48 different disciplines. In the ranking of 2019, the highest achievers of the University of Turku were Nursing Science (position 51–100), Education (101–150), life sciences (201–250), and Sociology (201–250).

– As international competition increases, the University of Turku’s success in several disciplines is great, and with high-quality multidisciplinary operations, we realise the University’s mission in education, research, and societal interaction, says Vice Rector of the University of Turku Kalle-Antti Suominen.

In total, the ranking included 1,222 universities that were evaluated in five broad subject areas and in 48 disciplines within. The University of Turku was ranked in four broad subject areas, the first two improving their positions from the previous year:

  • Life Sciences & Medicine (position 224)
  • Arts & Humanities (304)
  • Social Sciences & Management (343)
  • Natural Sciences (451–500)

The University of Turku was ranked in the world’s top 500 in the following 12 disciplines, six of which improved their positions from the previous year:

  • Nursing (position 51‒100)
  • Education (101‒150)
  • Biological Sciences (201‒250)
  • Sociology (201‒250)
  • Business & Management Studies (251‒300)
  • Medicine (251‒300)
  • Law (251‒300)
  • Psychology (251–300)
  • Economics & Econometrics (301‒350)
  • Material Science (351–400)
  • Physics & Astronomy (401‒450)
  • Chemistry (451‒500)

The QS Rankings by Subject considers academic reputation, employer reputation, and effectiveness of research, the emphasis of which differs between disciplines.
