University of Turku Strengthens Sea and Maritime Studies

01.12.2017

The University of Turku has long traditions in multidisciplinary sea and maritime research. At the moment, the University is recruiting two assistant or associate professors (tenure track) and a research director.

Sea and maritime studies is one of the six thematic collaborations in the Strategy of the University of Turku, through which the University’s research is profiled. The University is now further strengthening its sea and maritime expertise and research by recruiting two assistant or associate professors (tenure track) and a research director to one of the profiling areas of the Academy of Finland.

The assistant or associate professors will be working at the Department of Biology and at the School of History, Culture and Arts Studies, and the research director at Finland Futures Research Centre.

Sea and maritime studies consists of aquatic and environmental studies, combined with research and training in logistics, shipbuilding, port development, maritime law and cultural studies. The University collaborates with Åbo Akademi University in this profiling area.

By bringing these strong research areas together, the aim is to strengthen and broaden international research excellence, to intensify interdisciplinary collaboration and to build unique future potential for leading-edge research.

– Strengthening sea and maritime studies supports the positive structural change in Southwest Finland. At the University of Turku, interfaces between scientific disciplines and interdisciplinary research provide opportunities for new openings in research, says Vice Rector responsible for research Kalle-Antti Suominen.
