18.12.2023

During the joint application round on 3–17 January 2024, you will have the opportunity to apply to 16 distinct international Master’s degree programmes at the University of Turku. Each programme is designed to cater to diverse academic interests and career aspirations. At the same time, there will be a separate application procedure for one European joint degree programme.

The University of Turku offers international Master’s degree programmes in seven faculties during the joint application round. It is possible to apply to the international degree programmes once a year. For studies starting in August 2024, the applications are open for two weeks on 3–17 January. As part of the Finnish joint application procedure, applicants can conveniently apply to a maximum of six different study programmes offered by Finnish higher education institutions using a single application form.

The teaching language is English in our international degree programmes, and no preliminary Finnish language skills are required. Both international and domestic Finnish applicants are welcome to apply to our international Master’s degree programmes.

Additionally, during the same application window, a unique opportunity awaits with one of the European joint degree programmes: the Master’s Degree programme in European Languages, Cultures and Societies in Contact. This distinctive two-year programme forms part of the EC2U collaboration between several prestigious European universities. During the two-year long study time, students spend semesters in several universities and receive degrees from all of these universities upon graduation.

Acknowledging the competitive landscape, the University of Turku emphasizes the importance of showcasing one’s motivation and rationale for choosing a particular degree programme. Applicants are encouraged to familiarize themselves with document requirements beforehand. Several programmes assess candidates based on motivation letters or interviews.

The University of Turku is committed to fostering a more diverse student body. The university welcomes international applicants and strives to double the number of international Master’s degree students by 2030, as outlined in its International Programme published in 2021. The number of applicants has multiplied in recent years: for example in 2023, the number of applications grew by 76%. To accommodate the increasing interest, the University is actively working on a sustainable way to expand the study places within its international programmes.

Mari Kähkönen, Head of Admission Services at the University of Turku, emphasizes the significance of candidates aligning their personal interests and career objectives with their chosen degree programmes. She underscores the need for applicants to articulate their motivations clearly to stand out in the growing pool of applicants.

The University of Turku extends comprehensive support to international students throughout their academic journey, assisting them in integrating into the university community, as well as into the vibrant student city of Turku and the Finnish culture. Various initiatives, including chats with current students, orientation bus tours, the International Friendship Programme and career events, aim to provide a holistic and enriching experience for students beyond academics.
