East Asian Studies at the Open University

In Asianet´s online courses you gain key knowledge of Asian history and contemporary societies as well as business environments.

The Finnish University Network for Asian Studies (Asianet) promotes education and research on Asia in Finland. The Network offers MOOC courses and other online courses on both bachelor’s and master’s levels. You can complete the courses also at the Open University.

The courses offered as open university education are organized in cooperation with the East Asian Research and Education Center (CEAS) of the University of Turku. CEAS is the only academic unit in Finland that studies the contemporary societies of East Asia from a social science perspective. The courses are included in the study offer of the Finnish University Network for Asian Studies (Asianet), coordinated by CEAS. Introduction to Chinese History 5 ECTS credits

The course introduces students to Chinese history from the Stone Age to the present. The focus is on the political development and change of the Chinese state, classical Chinese political philosophy and statecraft, dynastic political system, the dynamics of the interaction between ‘barbarians’ and the Chinese civilization as well as Western influence in China. Also the modern and contemporary histories of China are introduced and the historical roots of the modern Chinese society discussed during the course.

Online course with lectures and literature. This course does not have a fixed schedule. When you have watched the lectures and read the obligatory materials you can take the exam. A home exam is arranged once a month.

Introduction to Chinese Contemporary History 5 ECTS credits

The course introduces students to Chinese contemporary history from the revolution to the present. The central theme in the course is to follow the folding and unfolding of the Communist experiment in China and the emergence of a new aspiring economic and political superpower by the early 21st century. Questions such as the nature of the communist revolution, Mao Zedong and his legacy, the Great Leap Forward, the Cultural Revolution, Deng Xiaoping and the reform era policies as well as developments in more recent past are discussed and analyzed during the course from the historical point of view. The course is essential for those who want to gain deeper understanding of the great social, economic and political transformation of China in contemporary history.

Introduction to Mongolian Politics and Society 2 ECTS credits

This course is designed to help students understand the dynamics of Mongolian politics by exploring major points in Mongolian political history, Central Asian geo-political location in the 20th century, political democracy, changing political and economic interests towards East Asia since the 1990s. Moreover, structure of Mongolian government, political institutions, and elections will be introduced in the lectures.

Project Management in China and East Asia 4 ECTS credits

This course introduces students to project management in general and in East Asia in particular. Students learn to design and plan a concrete (notional) project, organize and manage resources to achieve the specific project goals, outcomes and outputs. The course starts with basic exercises in project planning techniques after which students learn about project management in East Asian countries. To complete the course, students draft in groups a project proposal for a project that could be implemented in East Asia.
