The University of Turku offers several non-degree programmes, specialisation studies and individual courses in English. Study right is given by faculties and applies only to the studies for which the right has been granted and is valid only for the period specified for them. Attendance is automatically recorded for the entire period of study right.

  • If you have also a degree student's study right, you need to register with that according to degree student's registration instructions.

Study rights are entered into study register system Peppi in the Student Centre Disco. You will receive e-mail from Disco when your registration has been completed.

Degree students from Åbo Akademi University, TUAS and Novia
Flexible study right between the universities in the Turku area

Universities in the Turku region (University of Turku (UTU), Åbo Akademi University (ÅAU), Turku University of Applied Sciences (TUAS) and Yrkeshögskolan Novia) have agreed that flexible study between them is generally free of charge for both the student and the university.

Applications must be made in the manner required by the host university.​​ 

  • The study right for courses at University of Turku is applied for by registering for a cross study (Ristiinopiskelupalvelu, RIPA) course via the PSP at your own university.
    • You will receive an email notification when you have been accepted to the course at the UTU and your study right at the UTU has been established.
  • If there is not a valid cross study (RIPA) agreement for the studies you are applying for, apply using the UTUForms form, where you log in with your home university's username.
    • You will receive an email notification when you have been registered for a study right at the University of Turku under a cooperation agreement. 
    • Remember to register separately for the course in UTU Peppi.

Until 2023-2024 in some degree programmes operated together with Åbo Akademi University (ÅAU) and University of Turku (UTU) the study right for non-degree studies in UTU was given automatically.

  • No additional study time is granted for these studies, but the application is made in accordance with the JOO study guidelines.
Degree students of another University in Finland (incl. JOO-studies)
The Flexible Study Rights JOO agreement expires on 1.1.2026.
  • Based on the Flexible Study Rights JOO agreement, a student who has a degree (undergraduate or postgraduate) from a Finnish university can be admitted to the University of Turku to study minor subject study modules or individual courses.
  • Students from Åbo Akademi Unuiversity, Turku University of Applied Sciences or Yrkeshögskolan Novia can continue to be granted study rights at the University of Turku on the basis of an agreement between the universities in the Turku area.

New study right and registration for the first academic year as an attending student is done at the Student Centre Disco after the decision of the Faculty.

  • Your personal details have been transferred from the application system.
  • After registration you will receive an email from the Student Centre Disco.
Cancelling the registration
  • You can inform the Student Centre Disco if you do not want to be registered as attending with the university. 
    • Please remember to tell your student number or Finnish ID code in your message to Disco. Message can be sent securely from one UTU email to another.
  • You can re-register as an attending student later on (during your study time). Please contact the Student Centre Disco for re-registration. However, there will be no re-registration fee.

You need to be registered as an attending student at your home university to be able to study with your JOO study right at the University of Turku.

Exchange students

New study right and registration as an attending student for the whole study time is done at the Student Centre Disco after the decision of the Faculty or the International Services.

  • Your personal details have been transferred from the application system SoleMove.

Student Union membership

  • Membership for the Student Union is voluntary for exchange students.
  • Membership fee and the benefits depend on the level of your studies (Master/PhD).
  • You will receive a bank transfer slip for the voluntary Student Union payment after arriving in Finland.
  • As a member of Student Union you can order a student card.

Exchange students are not entitled to use the services of the Finnish Student Health Service

  • Starting in January 2021 incoming exchange students are not entitled to use the services of the Finnish Student Health Service, and thus they do not have to pay the healthcare fee to Kela. 
Exchange students from Åbo Akademi University
There is a flexible study right between the universities in the Turku area

As an exchange student at Åbo Akademi University, you can apply for courses at the University of Turku with the electronic UTUForms application form

  • Please use your home university's user account (ABO) to log into the system.
  • You will receive email notifications when yo​​ur application is moving forward in the UTUForms system.
  • The universities will decide to which studies they take ​​flexible study right students. ​​

  • It is not possible to register for courses of Turku School of Economics
  • For courses of the Language Centre you must apply for the right to participate by filling in the Application to study as a non-degree student.

Studies at continuing education and training programmes at the University of Turku are not entered into Peppi system (e.g. Brahea Centre). These units have their own study register systems.


Student union membership and student card

  • Student Union membership is compulsory for undergraduate students and voluntary for PhD and exchange students (Universities Act 558/2009, 46§)
  • Other students are not eligible to join the Student Union. Therefore students in non-degree studies are not allowed to join the Student Union or to get a student card.
