The University of Turku was ranked among the top 500 universities in the world in 21 subjects in the latest Global Ranking of Academic Subjects by the Shanghai Ranking.
Published since 2009, the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects is one of the most closely followed university rankings in the world. The results are based on the quality of research, international collaboration, top research, and esteemed academic recognitions. This year, the Ranking listed more than 1,900 universities across 55 subjects.
The University of Turku was ranked among the world's top 500 universities in 21 subjects. The rankings are not directly comparable between subjects, as the number of universities ranked varies from subject to subject. Out of the subjects of the University of Turku, Dentistry & Oral Sciences improved its ranking by rising to 21st place in the subject ranking. In the previous year's ranking, Dentistry & Oral Sciences was ranked 50th.
Professor Pekka Vallittu, Head of the Institute of Dentistry, believes that there are several factors behind the success.
“Dentistry is, in fact, continuing its good ranking results of many years. I think there are a few very clear explanations for this: we have a very strong international research network, which brings visiting researchers and doctoral researchers to our institute on a regular basis. Dentistry is a discipline in its own right and international postgraduate students apply specifically to graduate schools, which are schools in their own discipline. The high visibility of its activities in terms of their impact on treatment practices internationally and its corporate partnerships will strengthen the visibility of the institution. Of course, we still aim to improve. For example, the number of articles published in top journals and cross-fertilisation with other disciplines is an objective for the future," says Vallittu.
