University of Turku strengthens its position in the QS World University Rankings

The University of Turku has been ranked 366th in the latest QS World University Rankings, marking a rise of nine places compared to last year.

The QS World University Rankings remains one of the most well-known, comprehensive and significant global university rankings. This year, QS assessed a total of 1,501 universities from a pool of 8,467 institutions. The latest edition of the ranking included 112 new universities. Among Finnish universities, the University of Turku ranked fourth. The top position in the ranking is held by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

The QS World University Rankings are based on nine indicators, each carrying a different weight in determining a university’s position in the ranking. These indicators are: academic reputation (30%), employer reputation (15%), faculty-student ratio (10%), citations per faculty (20%), international faculty ratio (5%), international student ratio (5%), international research network (5%), employment outcomes (5%) and sustainability (5%).

In the latest QS rankings, the University's highest position based on a specific indicator was for international research networks (ranked 184th, up 45 places). The greatest improvement was seen in the sustainability indicator (ranked 250th, up 52 places). The University of Turku also improved its position in terms of faculty-student ratio (ranked 279th, up 12 places) and international faculty ratio (ranked 462nd, up 15 places).

The most notable drop was in the employment outcomes indicator (ranked 378th, down 57 places). Declines were also seen in citations per faculty (ranked 476th, down 34 places) and academic reputation (ranked 334th, down 17 places). The lowest indicator positions were in employer reputation (ranked 651st+) and the proportion of international students (ranked 801st+).
