A recently published case study on Finnish small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) offers new insight into business model changes in an internationalizing firm. Taina Eriksson, Marikka Heikkilä and Niina Nummela examined the business models of three internationalizing SMEs that were seeking to develop better organizational resilience.

The qualitative study found five distinct sources of resilience that the SMEs were pursuing: digitalization, strategic collaboration, customer intimacy, agile use of resources/expertise, and an improved revenue model. Along the processes of internationalization and business model innovation, these five drivers of resilience are the backbone on SME international resilience.
