The University of Turku was ranked among the 301–400 best universities in the 2023 Academic Ranking of World Universities. Among Finnish universities, the University of Turku ranked in a shared position of 2nd-3rd.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), or the so-called Shanghai Ranking, compares over 2,500 universities and publishes a list of the best 1,000. The ranking is based on indicators such as the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers, and the number of publications in Nature and Science journals. In this year's ranking, the University of Turku improved its position (301-400) compared to the results from the 2022 ranking (401-500).

The results of the Shangai Rankings show, among other things, the University of Turku's high-level expertise in the field of Food Sciences. The field has also done very well in the University's recent Research Assessment Exercise and it is one of the fastest developing fields of research with a high demand of expertise now and in the future.

"Food Sciences and Technology play a key role in promoting sustainable development, as securing food and diverse nutrition for a rapidly growing population is a major challenge globally. The University of Turku is in an excellent position to produce new scientific breakthroughs that can be used to respond to the challenges that climate change poses to food production," says University of Turku's Vice Rector Mika Hannula.

Altogether seven Finnish universities made the list of the top 1,000 universities. The University of Helsinki was ranked in the 101-150 category, making it the best-performing Finnish university in the ranking. Of the other Finnish universities, Aalto University was ranked in the same category and shares the second place of the Finnish universities with the University of Turku. Other Finnish universities featured in the ranking were the University of Oulu (401–500), Tampere University (501–600), University of Eastern Finland (501–600), and University of Jyväskylä (701–800).
