Biomedical research often occurs in painfully slow pace. Here, as an alternative approach we aim to pilot rapid research and collaboration. This takes a form of an experimental biomedical workshop / mini-hackathon called “SpeedFish” utilizing rapid zebrafish models for cardiovascular biology and disease.

In “SpeedFish” a small group of 10-15 people with different specialties such as (but not limited to) biologists, biochemists, pharmacologists, clinicians, bioinformaticians, image analysts or microscopy experts from the Turku research community work together.

The “SpeedFish” begins with participant application and selected participants meet regularly online, discuss and plan hypotheses, experiments, tasks and roles for upcoming hands-on session. During the three-day agile and intensive hands-on session, the aim is to generate data, analyses and draft text for a focused research report. After the hands-on session, the manuscript is finalized through online collaboration. Co-authorships in potential manuscript will be based on contributions along recommendation of TENK (https://www.tenk.fi/sites/tenk.fi/files/TENK_suositus_tekijyys_EN.pdf).

The research is carried out using embryonic zebrafish models, pharmacological tools and microscopy, enabling rapid analysis of cardiovascular form and function. The workshop is aimed for experienced researchers with M.Sc. or Ph.D. (or similar) degrees. Due to the rapid format, the workshop is not suitable for undergraduate students with no or little research experience.

Rapid experimentation would enable - not only fast results - but would also facilitate formation of a collaborations between researchers in the campus. Some simple snacks, soft drinks, tea and coffee are served during on-site hands-on to facilitate interactions and collaborative team spirit.
