Claims about the Ineffectiveness of Mammography Screening Are Incorrect

Mammography screening programme for 40-year-old women and for 70-year-old women has significantly decreased the breast cancer mortality rate. The doctoral dissertation research of med. lic. Ilmo Parvinen also proves that claims about overdiagnosis are incorrect. On the basis of his research, Parvinen recommends extending the screening programme to older women aged 70–74.

Many Forms of Co-operation between the University of Turku and Brazil

From 10th to 14th November 2014, the University of Turku is taking part in a delegation to Recife, situated in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. The trip is related to the operation of Intercity Collaboration of South West Coast of Finland (LOURA) with the objective to increase co-operation between the two areas.

Deadly E. coli Bacteria Bind Themselves to Cells with Fimbrial Adhesins

Researchers from the University of Turku discovered how the highly aggressive Escherichia coli, i.e. the E. coli bacteria, colonise the human intestine. Based on the discovery, the researchers are developing antibodies that could stop the infection caused by the bacteria resistant to antibiotics.

Flare of Gamma Radiation in Galaxy IC 310 Originated from Black Hole’s Event Horizon

A flare of electromagnetic gamma radiation from the black hole in the galaxy IC 310 has revealed new information about the production of gamma radiation. The researchers from Tuorla Observatory at the University of Turku, who are part of the research project, say that the discovery is significant.
