Published by the Shanghai Ranking at the end of June, the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2020 ranked altogether 4,000 universities in 54 subjects. The University of Turku was listed among the best universities in the world in 23 subjects.
The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2020 took into consideration the quality of research, international collaboration, top research, and esteemed academic recognitions. Altogether 54 subjects in natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medicine, and social sciences were evaluated. Humanities were not part of the ranking.
The University of Turku was listed extensively among the best universities – altogether in 23 of the 54 subjects.
– The success we have gained in this international ranking shows again the quality and strength of the University’s diversity and multidisciplinarity. Success in academic rankings strengthens our visibility and recognition which makes us an even more interesting partner for collaboration, says Rector Jukka Kola of the University of Turku on the significance of the ranking.
The University of Turku was the best Finnish university in nursing science, where the overall ranking was 32nd. The University was second best Finland in Dentistry, where the world ranking was 42nd.
The University was also second best in ecology (ranking 101–150), medical technology (151–200), sociology (151–200), food science & technology (201–300), and business administration (201–300).
– The subjects that succeeded in the ranking are well connected to the expertise clusters in Southwest Finland, which indicates that top level-research is an important factor in business life. Furthermore, our experts who conduct high-quality research are also significant social contributors, says Kalle-Antti Suominen, the Vice Rector responsible for research.
– Our persevering work for improving the quality and impact of our basic mission according to our own goals is also visible in university rankings. Behind our success is of course our motivated and highly skilled staff to whom I once again want to give my thanks, says Rector Kola.
