The University of Turku was ranked among the 301–400 best universities in the Academic Ranking of World Universities this year.
The global Academic Ranking of World Universities for 2019 was published on 15 August 2019. On the so-called Shanghai Ranking, the University of Turku was ranked among the 301–400 best universities. The University’s ranking remained the same as in 2018.
The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) uses several indicators to rank universities’ research and publications (e.g. the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers, and number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science).
Of the Finnish universities, the University of Helsinki was ranked highest at 63. The next best were the University of Turku, Aalto University and University of Oulu, all in the 400 category.
The ranking is published annually by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, and it is compiled by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University which was placed in the 82 category in this year's ranking. The so-called Shanghai ranking has been published since 2003.
ARWU also publishes a ranking of academic subjects. The 2019 ranking was published in July. The University of Turku had altogether 18 subjects among the best 500 in the subject ranking. The highest placed subjects were dentistry (23) and nursing science (category 51–75).
