Shanghai Ranking: University of Turku among Best 400 Universities in the World

18.08.2020

The University of Turku was ranked among the 301–400 best universities in the 2020 Academic Ranking of World Universities.

The global Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) for 2020, or the so-called Shanghai Ranking, was published on 15 August 2020. The University of Turku was ranked among the 301–400 best universities. The University’s ranking remained the same as in 2019.

Of the Finnish universities, the University of Turku was ranked the second best after the University of Helsinki which is among the world's best 100 universities as the 74th.

– Maintaining our ranking has required hard and productive work from the members of our University community, which has been particularly challenging due to the cuts in university funding in the last few years. This has resulted in a drop in the rankings of almost all Finnish universities compared to last year, says Rector Jukka Kola from the University of Turku.

– Internationally, rankings are followed closely and success in them increases the attractiveness of a university especially for international researchers and students. The university rankings should still be viewed critically, however, it is clearly better to be ranked among the best universities than not, notes Kola.
