Life, the Universe and Excel – the year 2021 for the metrics team

Now that corona has closed almost all the library units and customer service points what does the library staff do? Most of the library work is actually even in normal times done out of sight.  Therefore, even if the library units are mostly closed, there is plenty of work done. One of those tasks that are not so familiar or visible to library users is bibliometric and evaluation work, which is carried out by the library’s metrics team.

New Requirements of Open Access Publishing to Projects Funded from Academy Calls Opened After 1 January 2021

The Academy of Finland requires that Academy-funded projects commit to ensuring open access to their research outputs. Projects must therefore commit to ensuring immediate open access to their peer-reviewed articles. If the research data cannot be made openly available, the metadata must be stored in a Finnish or international data finder. These requirements apply to projects funded through Academy calls opened after 1 January 2021.

The Library imports publications by the University of Turku researchers to the Current Research Information System UTUCRIS around the year from several international and national databases. About 50 % of all publications in the University are harvested in the database imports. At the moment, the system contains 3,100 publications, which is approximately 54 % of the annual accumulation. At the moment, the system contains 3,800 publications, which is approximately 66 % of the annual accumulation.

The amount of publications authored by University of Turku-affiliated researchers and reported in the yearly publication data collection of the Ministry of Education increased again in 2019. The number exceeded 5900, when the year before it was nearly 5700. The amount of openly available publications kept increasing as well. Especially the number of peer-reviewed publications rose from 2018.
