ABSTRACT:
Despite the competitive advantage and international reputation of its education system, education export from Finland to Africa is benign and still a recent practice. In his lecture Dr. Doh will problematize the fact that Finnish export practices still rely on hands-on experiences. Hence, the evidence base for Finnish education export is weak, its theoretical models and patterns unestablished and the practices largely unsystematic. While current literature on education export is based on single disciplines mostly focusing on Finland internally, Dr. Doh postulates for multidisciplinary social science approaches on the external target contexts beyond Finland and leans his research on theoretical frameworks from diverse disciplines. The guest lecture is based on Dr. Doh´s study that employs both qualitative (Interview and document analysis) and quantitative (surveys in Africa) methods of data collection. The target groups are principally “the exporters” and “the importers” of higher education to Africa. The data will be complemented by an analysis of the export practices in Finland. Focusing on earlier western education export to Africa the research-related lecture will present emerging patterns of education export from Finnish Universities and aims to produce knowledge that can strengthen education export in Finland.
