Tiivistelmä väitöstutkimuksesta:
Parents having a child with a congenital abnormality face many challenges after the birth of their child. Especially the first discharge from hospital is a very stressful time.
For nurses it is difficult to assess what information each of the parents need and what they need to learn before taking their child home for the first time. In this dissertation, we developed an instrument to assess the knowledge needs the parents have before they leave the hospital for the first time after the birth of their child. The instrument consists of two parts. The first part is administered about two weeks before the baby leaves the hospital, the second part a few days before discharge. We found out that two weeks before discharge, most parents had less knowledge than they needed. Shortly before they left the hospital, most parents perceived that they had enough knowledge and most parents felt ready to take their child home. This shows that it is important for nurses to assess the knowledge needs of parents of a child with a congenital abnormality, so parents feel ready to take their child home.
