“Climate Adaptation in New York City: Lessons from Sandy”

In the spirit of United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris, KEKO Researchers December meeting is also focusing on climate change. We will have a visiting lecture by a renowned expert in the field, Dr. Major (Columbia University), who will assess New York City’s leading role in climate change adaptation, and the additional impetus given to this work by the impact of Hurricane Sandy. The lecture will be followed by or intertwined with a joint discussion. Staff and students alike are welcome to participate.

Dr. David C. Major is Senior Research Scientist at the Columbia University Earth Institute’s Center for Climate Systems Research. His principal scientific research focus is the adaptation of critical urban infrastructure to climate change. He has served as Lead, Adaptation Planning, for the New York City Panel on Climate Change. Among other responsibilities, he has been a Program Director for Global Environmental Change at the Social Science Research Council. 

Dr. Major is the author, co-author or co-editor of fifteen books on multipurpose, multiobjective water resources planning, infrastructure evaluation, climate change adaptation, literature and biography. He is spending part of the academic years 2014–5 and 2015–6 as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Helsinki, Finland.

 
The Sustainable Development Studies (KEKO) at University of Turku has coordinated and provided interdisciplinary education in ecological, social, cultural and economic sustainability since 2008.
 
Since autumn 2014, KEKO has organized an informal and interactive umbrella seminar for researchers and teachers interested in topics relating to sustainability and corporate responsibility. The purpose is to provide a cross-disciplinary platform for people to share ideas and to network. Thus far, KEKO organized successful research-oriented seminars with a focus on various sustainability and social responsibility themes, such as degrowth, sustainability reporting or methodological issues.
 
The seminar is open for people from all disciplinary backgrounds. New people – including  students – are always welcome. The language is English.
